RINIS Living Lab

Combining innovation with responsible policy is a major challenge for many public sector organisations. New technologies come with risks, such as in the areas of privacy and ethics for instance. For many years, the RINIS Living Lab has served as a secure and shielded digital test environment in which ministries and competent institutions are able to develop, explore and test new applications.

At the RINIS Living Lab, we focus on delivering Proofs of Concept (PoCs) and pilot schemes. In doing so, we demonstrate the genuine added value of innovations and minimise risks before solutions go live. Whether this concerns quantum-secure communications, privacy-enhancing technologies such as MPC and Ma3tch, or applications of artificial intelligence: in a controlled environment, we help organisations to explore and apply new technologies responsibly, without impacting the production environment.

As such, the RINIS Living Lab is not just a test environment, but a breeding ground for practical innovation. It meets the needs of decision-makers who seek to combine technological innovation with control and transparency. And as an independent party, we ensure that the know-how and experience gleaned are made available to all relevant public sector organisations, thereby promoting collaboration and further innovation.

Architecture

The RINIS Living Lab runs on a separate section of the RINIS cloud. The test environment realistically simulates production environments, but is completely separate therefrom. From this controlled environment, RINIS is able to securely connect to data sources or systems belonging to participants and customers. Needless to say, the environment complies with the Dutch government’s architectural principles and meets the highest standards for data protection and privacy: it is ISO 27001:2022-certified and BIO-compliant.

Technology

The RINIS Living Lab uses the same reliable infrastructure as the RINIS eco system:

• The Living Lab is a secure environment within the RINIS cloud, which is completely separate from the production environment.
• The connections to participants’ and customers’ data sources meet the highest security standards.
